The Ford Cortina Mark 2 was launched in 1966. When the 3.0-litre Essex V6 engine was launched in the same year, Jeff Uren's company undertook privately developing 2 door saloon, 4 door saloon and also estate variants of the Cortina with the Essex engine modified by Weslake, it was known as the Ford Cortina Savage. The Cortina Savage continued to be available as developments of the Mark 3 and Mark 4 Cortinas.Jeff Uren was a British racing driver and became the 1959 BSCC (now BTCC) champion in its second year, driving a group C Ford Zephyr Mark 2. Being a race tuning expert, mainly working with Fords, his company also developed a Ford Capri with a V8 4.7 litre engine, known as the Ford Capri Stampede. He was also a motorsport team manager for Ford and later became the Willment/Race Proved team along with John Willment.
This particular car was ordered in June 1970 by White Bros (Taunton) Ltd as a GT Estate, with Automatic transmission in Silver Fox and delivered to Jeff Uren Ltd for conversion to Savage specification, being the last Mark 2 Cortina Savage to be built. It was registered in October 1970 and is believed to have been retained by White Bros until November 1972 when they sold it to Mr RP Butler of Honiton. There is a very interesting log briefly detailing maintenance during Mr Butler's Ownership. In 1979, by which time the car had covered approximately 81,000 miles, Mr Butler contacted Jeff Uren with a view to selling the car; Jeff then kept it as his personal car for 20 years. In 1979/1980 the car was repainted in red.
In September 1999, the car was sold to its third private owner, who immediately set about having the engine and automatic transmission overhauled. The forth and current private owner purchased the car in 2001. During this ownership, the car has been comprehensively restored at an estimated cost in excess of £30,000.00, including an engine rebuild and slight uprate by Vulcan Engineering, replacement of numerous body panels with new and genuine Ford items and bare-metal repaint to the original specification of Silver Fox with hand-painted coachline, in all, just about every item on this car has been refurbished or replaced.
Some modifications have also been carried out, which include fitment of a Ford Capri 3.09 differential, battery relocated to inner wing under-floor to provide more boot space, fitment of Filter King fuel device and Facet fuel pump, fitment of roller top mounts, fitment of stainless steel exhaust system. The car is fitted with Contour 6 bucket seats, Lotus gauges, which are all fully functioning and comes with Owner Handbook and Service book. The car benefits from recent specialist full Waxoiled treatment and has recently been serviced, the car is M.O.T. tested until July 21st 2011.
