The "Short Chassis" was the first Aston Martin model to bear the name Volante and was launched at the same time as the DB6 in 1966. They were initially simply named, "Aston Martin Volante". However, the "Short Chassis" name was soon adopted to avoid confusion with the later DB6s. Of the 37 cars produced just 24 were RHD and just 3 of these were Vantage specification from new. This most attractive limited run of cars had the chassis of a DB5 (shorter than a DB6) but incorporated features and the drive train of a DB6. The bodywork was similar to that of a DB6 convertible but with unique, distinct and prettier features including swept boot lids, split bumpers, and unique rear light clusters.

DBVC/2320/R, the first Vantage specification RHD Short Chassis Volante, was delivered in May 1966 presented in California Sage with Tan leather. That car was thought lost and most probably broken up for parts. However, in 2009 the car was discovered and extracted from its hiding place on the Isle of Wight by DK Engineering. The car was still complete, albeit requiring a total rebuild which was commenced almost immediately by DK. Once completed it was then sold by DK to the current owner with whom it shall remain for many years.

DBVC/2307/R, the final Vantage specification RHD Short Chassis Volante, has been owned by the same family for many years and is still cherished and used by them although rarely seen at public events.

This car offered for sale by DK Engineering, DBVC/2322/R, is the second of the three cars built. It was supplied new to Lt. Colonol Bellamy of Sussex and being of vantage specification it was equipped with the appropriate Webber carburettors, a limited slip differential, a close ratio gearbox and accordingly engine number 400/2795V ("V" for vantage!). The car soon found its way to France and was first registered there in the name of its believed second owner, Pierre Chillet, a famous sausage manufacturer from Paris in 1976.

It was with the Chillet family that the car remained until 1998 when the car was purchased by Ernest Smith via Charles Prince of Paradise Garage in London. The car was in good sound running order but after years use it was in a patinated state also. Mr Smith decided to have the car totally restored and during 2000 and 2001 a total and comprehensive job was carried out by marque specialists, Post Vintage Restorations.

Sadly Mr Smith passed away very shortly after the car was completed. In December 2001 the car passed to what is believed to have been just the cars 4th owner, W.R. "Bill" Brown. Mr Brown was a meticulous enthusiast who had searched for the best Short Chassis possible as that was what he wanted. Understandably he was thrilled to find not only one in its original and his preferred colour combination, but a vantage specification example from new no less! Mr Brown went to great lengths to improve both the car and the contents of its history file carrying out much research. Mr Brown was even able to reinstate the original registration number.

Since 2005, DBVC/2322/R has been enjoyed by two further owners. It has been meticulously well maintained and most recently was placed second in class at the Salon Prive concours in 2012. At DK Engineering we are delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare motor car that is presented in superb condition throughout - it is quite simply what is in many an experts opinion the most desirable and rarest "Volante" Aston Martin there is, and it is almost certain to say that it is the only one of its type available for sale at this time or in the near future.
