One of just Seventeen Examples Built

The predecessor to Porsche's iconic Speedster was the extremely limited production Typ 540 Sport Roadster, commonly known as the ‘America Roadster’ because of the intended destination of most of the cars, and ultimately, the subsequent Speedsters. Just seventeen examples were produced in aluminium, with an additional car bodied in steel. Today, just 10 of the aluminium roadsters and the single steel car are known to exist.

All but one of the America Roadsters were delivered new to the United States, including the example here which was delivered to Larry Kulok of New York. Kulok entered the car in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1953 but sadly failed to start the race. Remaining with him for a few years, the car was raced both on the east coast and subsequently the west coast. It remained in the ownership of celebrated Oregon car dealer and racing driver Monte Shelton before being acquired by the fifth and current owner in the U.K., joining his significant collection of early Porsches.

Upon his purchase, the car was shipped straight to DK Engineering where it was restored to Ivory over a brown leather interior and first shown to the public in June of 2013. Over the ensuing years it has remained out of the public spotlight and is currently undergoing an interior retrim to its original green leather interior.
