The last 166 MM Constructed - The Sole Example Bodied by Pinin Farina

The last of the 166 MMs built, this would be the only 166 MM to boast coachwork crafted by Pinin Farina. Sold new to Kurt Zeller an industrialist and amateur racer, the car raced at a variety of events across Europe before it found its way to Florida, having been bought by a U.S. serviceman stationed in Germany.

Remaining in the United States for the majority of its life, DK Engineering were made aware of the car in Florida where it was for sale and in need of a restoration. It soon became clear that the 166MM was largely complete and remarkably original. Pininfarina job numbers were still stamped and chalked on several parts, not least the fuel tank and inner panels. The car was acquired and shipped to the UK and upon arrival we embarked on a comprehensive restoration to return the car to as it was the day it left Pininfarina's facilities. The bodywork was restored by Clive Smart's Shapecraft Limited, an engine rebuild was done by Chris Reynolds, and Adrian George of Spraytech handled the paintwork.

Passing to a Dutch collector soon after the completion of the restoration in 2005, the following year it was shown at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and the Concours d'Elegance Paleis Het Loo, where it was named Best in Show. It was also featured in a number of publications, including being the cover feature on issue 155 of Cavallino magazine.

The 166 MM remained in the Netherlands until late 2018 when it was repurchased by DK and was certified by Ferrari Classiche at the factory just in time to be shown at the Cavallino Classic in January 2019. This would be the car's first public outing in five years and it scored exceptionally well considering that the restoration had been completed some fifteen years later. Later that year, it was acquired by the current owner, who had been looking for an early Ferrari to take part in the Mille Miglia.

Shipped to Italy, the Ferrari performed faultlessly on the rally and placed 132nd overall with no major hiccups despite 30 degree heat and a day of downpours. As a fitting testament to the car’s qualities, it was voted Classic Driver’s ultimate choice for the event.
