The ultimate 911. There is no more iconic silhouette than that of the early 911 and of all the variations and differences in these cars the shape of the 2.7 RS with its Aerodynamic ducktail is the most instantly recognisable. It captured the imagination like the Jaguar E type had a decade before, and the initial run of 500 sold out almost immediately. Porsche had to reinstate production to build more – another 1,090, in fact – in order to meet demand.

RS stands for Rennsport in German, meaning "racing sport". The Carrera name was reintroduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950s. These sensational cars also achieved great success on the race track, RS both in touring and in lightweight spec were raced in almost every sports car race, the lightly modified RSR examples scored victories in the Targa Florio, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring all in their first year. Weighing in at only 975kg, 2.7 RS's have an impressive top speed of 150mph and performance figures of 0-65mph in just 5.8 seconds.

This example was supplied new to Italy (C07) and is a factory M472 specification (touring) example that was built in February 1973. An early second-batch car (0672), it was finished in the colour it is presented today of “6262/12” (light yellow). It left the factory with several desirable options including electric windows, sports seats and most sought-after, the limited-slip differential.

Imported to the UK from Italy in 1988 in very original condition by Michael Fisher with some 64,000 kms and then sold to Porsche racing legend Nick Faure. Then in 1989 the car was sold by Michael Lavers (now with 67,000kms) to David Lomas. Mr Lomas had a fabulous collection of cars including Jaguar C and D-Types. He also famous for keeping fastidious mileage logs and this 2.7 RS is no exception to that rule. Contained within this car’s history file is that logbook which records regular maintenance over a 30 year ownership. Including at least one speeding fine! On his passing the car remained within the care of his family until sold on in 2007 with 111,000 kms. Since then, the car has passed through several owners, residing most recently within a collection of significant Porsche examples.

“SPD 716L” is regarded as one of the most original examples of the legendary Carrera RS it retains all original panels until the most recent owner replaced the front wing to address some minor rust. The original wing is retained with the car to this day. The cars engine and production numbers are also certified to match with the original build records. As always with these cars, regular use, maintenance, and mechanical sympathy throughout its life are key to a great example. This car still retains its correct Glasurit window stamps and bitumen on shock towers under the bonnet.

Throughout its life in the UK, the car has been maintained by marque specialists Tuthill and Maxted-Page. Available to view at our showrooms just outside London immediately, this example is accompanied by its original books, (including rare RS Supplement) and tools and presents as a superbly usable proposition.
