McLaren’s rival to Ferrari’s SP1 & SP2 Monza came in the form of the Elva in 2021. McLaren Automotive’s lightest car to date, the Elva embraces the principles of Bruce McLaren’s original open top sports cars of the 1960s- the M1A, M1B and M1C. Bruce McLaren initially made a couple of early cars in-house before subbing out the remaining production to Elva Cars.
There is more than nod to the principles of those 60s cars. The design of the Elva very much pays tribute to those cars of old, noticeably an exclusively open-top two seater packing a healthy punch from behind the seats. The most powerful iteration of McLaren’s 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 at the time of build, the Elva sports 804 bhp and 590lbft. At 1,148 kg dry or 1,269kg with fluids the Elva has a power-to-weight ratio of 644 bhp per ton, placing above that of the P1, Senna and even original the McLaren F1. Just 149 examples would be made available for sale.
