GT40 P/1027 - The "Grand Prix" Camera Car

United KingdomLocation: United Kingdom

GT40 P/1027 was sent out for the Brussells Motor Show in 1966. It was presented in the configuration it has been restored to, that being Belgian yellow racing livery and full race specification. In April 1966 the car was purchased by MGM to be used for the film , 'Grand Prix', directed by John Frankenheimer. The film included much footage from the 1966 season, as well as some unforgettable acting by genuine Formula One drivers such as Graham Hill and the British broadcaster Raymond Baxter. The action was considerably enhanced by the high-speed stunts where stars such as James Garner (a very handy driver) followed this modified GT40, just inches away from the camera lens. The producers used professional drivers behind the wheel of the 200mph GT40 and it took real guts to maintain a realistic pace at a circuit such as Monza.

Following its film career, P/1027 was sold by MGM to Charles Sechan in Prospect, Pennsylvania, who resprayed it maroon with gold sill stripes and used it as a road car. In February 1968 it was sold to Jim Toensing, of Minneapolois. Jim raced the car and following a shunt at Elkhart Lake, Ladwig commissioned a complete restoration. The restoration was to the exact original specifications using original components and parts. The end result is one of the finest and most correct GT-40's in the world. It was judged "best race car" at the meadow brook concours in 1993. Jim displayed the car at the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum in Costa Mesa, California, where it remained until the museum's closure in the late 1990s.

In 1999 P/1027 was purchased by Sir Anthony Bamford, who Entrusted its race preparation to Gelscoe Motorsport, During its time in the JCB stable the car won outright the Whitsun Trophy whilst being driven by Sam Hancock. In 2006 it was sold to Lord Irvine Laidlaw who campaigned it - now in his familiar maroon/silver colour scheme, and run by the experienced Simon Hadfield - at the 2008 Le Mans Classic and at Dijon in 2009.

In 2010 the car was sold to its most recent owner who has raced the car just a handful of times including at the Le Mans Classic in 2010. The current owner has always had the car properly maintained and "on the button" as it stands here today. P/1027 has full FIA HTP papers - Period F - and a full history file. This car represents the perfect opportunity for those looking for a potent historic racing car with fascinating history that is eligible for the greatest events such as the Le Mans Classic, the Tour Auto or even the Goodwood Revival.
