First shown as a prototype in the 1954 New York Motor Show the 190SL Roadster retained much of the 300SL's style in a more affordable package. In production from 1955-1963, the 190SL was powered by an 1897cc overhead cam four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed, floor-change manual transmission. With a quoted 105bhp on tap, its reputed 110mph top speed was a match for the likes of the Triumph TR2 and Austin-Healey 100. Smooth and durable, the powerplant was noted for its unstressed nature. The two-seater handled remarkably well and had a fantastic ride, owing to its underpinnings being derived from the 180-series saloon. The quality of the construction was paramount and this showed inn the final product which was extremely durable and strong. It was the 190SL that convinced Mercedes-Benz to continue with the SL concept.
Chassis number 14819 is 1959 manual 190 SL presented in gorgeous mid metallic blue paint that has a beautifully trimmed blue leather interior and flawless chrome brightwork. Between 2000 and 2004 the car was subject to a total restoration to perfection by marquee specialists Van Dijk in Holland. Every nut and bolt received full treatment and the total cost was 145,000 euros (bills and picture file to support this). The car has covered just 1000 dry kms since completeion and had a £2,500 major service in June 2010.
When the car entered our showroom a full inspection was carried out in our workshops and not a single fault could be found, it was noted during road test that the motor is in excellent health and pulls extremely well and as expected this 190SL is better than it would have been new! The car is ready to view, UK registered and is perhaps the best 190 SL available in the world at present.
