This 1964 Shelby Cobra is one of AC Cars' second generation Mark IIs produced from 1963 to 1965. The Ford 289 engine was new to the Cobra for 1964 and, prior to the introduction of the 427, the 289 was the standard bearer for Cobra in the USA, dominating the USRRC with only one non-win in three years of racing.
This example was first billed to Shelby on 5th June 1964 and was shipped to the United States on board the SS Alblasserdyk. It subsequently arrived at Peterson Ford in Encinitas, California, and was specified from new to have Group "A" accessories including Tuned Air Cleaner, Chrome Aluminium Rocker Covers, Tinted Sun Visors, Smith Heater and Seat Belts. Additionally the car was graced with more options including 5 x Chrome Wheels, Large Oil Pan and Rare Factory Roll Bar. The car was later sold to its first private owner Mr Henry T. Vance of Boston who purchased the car for the price of $5780.55 during a visit to Southern California. Henry had the car shipped back to Boston where he kept it as his most prized possession until 1966 when it was purchased by Victor Myette of Massachusetts.
Myette, a keen motorist, used the car as his daily transport until 1969 when it was purchased by Peter Portante of New Britain. Subsequent to Peter's ownership, the car found its way into the ownership of Greg Collus in New York in 1989. The decision was made to send the Cobra to Tom Kirkham who had earned an outstanding reputation for concours quality restorations. In late 1992 Hubert Hoffman acquired the car, covering a mere 40 miles before his passing away in 2004. The car next found its way via expert Cobra dealer Lynn Park to Skip Atkins of California in 2005. An avid car fanatic and keen to drive the car more regularly, Atkins installed a Tremec 5-speed gearbox.
Bruce Canepa later acquired the car and sent the car to a comprehensive restoration ensuring that the car's originality was maintained. During that time it was recgnised that even the engine block retains its original number as per its delivery in 1964. During this concours restoration the car's original 4-speed gearbox was reinstalled and, in addition, the original chrome wire wheels were re-fitted and the original roll hoop was kept intact. The car was finished in the colour combination of White with Blue Racing Livery over a Black Hide interior. In 2015 the car was purchased by its most recent proprietor, a fastidious collector of only the most transcendent cars and it was subsequently exported to the United Kingdom. The car was most recently exercised in the 2016 Ennstal Classic through Austria's most beautiful landscape.
This exceptional Cobra is presented in superb condition and comes accompanied by its original spare wire wheel as well as leather hood and is located in our showrooms just outside London available to view immediately.
