Conceived by Lofty England in 1954, the first D-Type was completed in 1954 with the first customer car being 'XKD 508'. D-Types would go on to become some of the most successful endurance racers of all time and were only superseded by Brian Lister's Knobblys and Costins. The D-Type throughout its production underwent various changes including famously the addition of a tail fin (thought to increase high speed stability) and the later addition of the "Long Nose" D, which meant that by 1957 the D-Type was now powered by a 3.8 Litre engine with a wide angle head. The early short nose cars such as this example had a 3.4 Litre motor.
