In 1973 the 911 S sat atop the range of 911’s. Ahead of the arrival of the homologation 2.7RS’, the S offered greatly improved handling capabilities over the pre-1972 cars.

Now with a 2.4 air-cooled six, a rearranged, improvements to the gearbox, derived from the 908 race car meant for the removal of the dogleg layout. Independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes meant it was now much easier to drive, and drive fast. 1973 also brought with it the end of the long bonnet, thin bumper cars. 1974 brought with it increased weight and safety bumpers. The ’73 S offered 190hp at 6,500rpm and new chin spoiler to reduce front end lift by 40%.

This excellent LHD 911 S was first delivered in November 1972 as a ’73 model year car to its first owner in Italy. It was delivered as presented today, in highly sought after and period, Tangerine. Accompanied by its Porsche letter of authenticity, the car today presents extremely well. Recent years have seen extensive works carried out. Spending a large amount of time in Italy, in 1998 it made its way to its new, passionate owner in the Netherlands. After a thorough inspection credited its originality, some work was done to correct some imperfections. This was done by both a Porsche main dealer and specialists. Purchased in 2002, the car was imported into the UK. Further maintenance was carried out by Fulham-based Porsche specialist, Leigh’s Garage.

In 2013, the car benefitted from a complete strip-down and respray, remaining Tangerine. The drivetrain was removed and the engine rebuilt using new old-stock parts. The gearbox and suspension parts were rebuilt and the car reassembled by renowned marque specialists, Autofarm. The history file that accompanies the car has invoices for the majority of the works carried out, both in the UK and in Holland.

Since the restoration it has been meticulously maintained by renowned marque specialists, Jaz Porsche and further works by Autofarm, both helping to ensure the car has remained fit, healthy and ready to be enjoyed immediately. The interior is complete with Houndstooth seat inserts recently retrimmed with no expense spared at O’Rourke Coachtrimmers. This example also benefits from a SCART sports exhaust system, fitted sports steering wheel (with the original included), original toolkit and Becker GP radio.

Due to their expense in period, relatively few S coupes were built. Of the 1430 examples built, over a 1/3 of them went to the US directly, making this European example a rare and much sought after one.

The 911 S makes for quite the capable and most usable classic car. Most recently this example has been within a collection of cars, affording it regular maintenance but limited mileage, with this example having covered no more than 1,000 miles since 2015. It is available to view at our showrooms just outside London immediately.
