Attendees of the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, bore witness to the unveiling of a prototype seemingly so advanced, that surely it was destined to remain as such. The ‘Gruppe B’ was the brainchild of Helmuth Bott – Porsche’s chief engineer – who had his sights firmly set on the World Rally Championship and therefore ran with the idea for an all-wheel-drive 911. Group B would evolve into a technological arms-race, and the ‘Project 961’ – as it was internally referred – was to be Porsche’s champion.

As per regulations, manufacturers would have to produce no-fewer than 200 road-going examples in order to compete, and the 1985 edition of Frankfurt’s expo saw the debut of the production-ready – newly designated – 959.

With an output of 444 hp at 6500rpm, the flat-6 – aside from having roots traceable to Porsche’s dominant endurance prototypes – delivered power via an ingenius, staggered, turbocharging system which introduced boost at lower RPMs by utilising a single turbo, before pairing with the second, delivering full boost as the revs continued to climb. All of the above was laid down by Porsche’s Steuer-Kupplung four-wheel-drive system as per Bott’s original intention. This solution ensured a gradual and continuous build of power with minimal lag, circumventing the greatest challenge of the era.

Such was the level of dedication to ensure the 959 delivered on its promises, clients would not see their cars for another two years, by which time Group B had folded, and Bott’s entry hopes along with it, however, despite the huge financial burden development had placed on Porsche’s shoulders, production continued headstrong.

Just 337 959s were completed and of those, 272 were delivered in Komfort specification. Both Komfort and Sport offered the same 444 hp power output with the former ensuring clients experienced the breadth of the 959s blistering performance alongside a host of – as the name would suggest – comforting amenities, including a full leather interior, and air-conditioning.

In Komfort specification, the Porsche 959 represents not only a technological marvel – intended for one of motorsport’s most infamous categories – but an incredibly well-rounded, accomplished supercar, a trait synonymous with Porsche.

Delivered to Per Axel Arwidsson of Stockholm on 13th October 1988, this 959 Komfort presents resplendent in Guards Red, one of the most recognisable Porsche colours.

After its time in Sweden, the 959 was passed on to a Mr Hartmut Hofmann of Berlin, who would cover over 50,000 kilometres in the 959 throughout two-decades of ownership. Mr Hoffman would also take fastidious care of it in the process, with a great deal of maintenance records on file, extensively documenting the 959’s encounters with Porsche Centre Berlin.
