The fame of this Lotus 18 comes from Stirling Moss's against-the-odds victories with it in the Monaco and German Grands Prix of 1961. Thanks to Moss's sublime skills, chassis '912', an out of date, down on power, four cylinder Lotus, beat Ferrari's state of the art 'Shark Nose' cars with their potent V6 engines.

Moss's team owner, Rob Walker, said of the Monaco success, 'I thought it was Stirling's greatest drive; in fact I thought it was the greatest drive by any driver, that I had ever seen in my life.' That day '912' was also visually distinctive because it raced with its side panels removed, helping not only to keep its brilliant driver cool in the hot weather but also revealing him hard at work.
