Gordon Murray Automotive, James Cottingham, and celebration of Eddie Jordan at the 82MM.

Each year, events at Goodwood seem to attract an ever-larger crowd; and this was no different for the 82nd edition of the Members’ meeting.

As opposed to other years, such as the infamously snow-covered 76th Members’ Meeting, the weather was favourable and mild over the weekend of the 12th-13th April.

Saturday began with the usual parade lap, followed by the Hailwood trophy for 2-and 4-stroke motorcycles, and the pre 1939 S.F. Edge Trophy practice sessions. This was followed by the Gordon Murray Automotive dynamic demonstration, where T.33, T.50, and the track-only T.50s Lauda were put through their paces by our friend Dario Franchitti around the West Sussex Circuit. Additionally, eight customer T.50 were also displayed - including James Cottingham’s Velvet Passion example.

For the Gurney Cup, James Cottingham and Jeremy Cottingham teamed up in the Le Mans Raced, 1966 Scuderia Bear Ford GT40. Looking strong in practice, they qualified P6, which converted to P5 by the end of the 30-minute race against a performant and highly competitive grid.

Alpine celebrated their 70th anniversary, with a 70-car demonstration ranging from electric super-mini A290, to Le mans Raced 200+ mile per hour A220, as well as a static display which was viewable to visitors for the duration of the weekend.

Perhaps the most poignant moment of the weekend was the tribute paid to the great Eddie Jordan. It was an honour to be requested to exhibit his first Formula One car, the 1991 Jordan 191, at a memorial temporary pub named ‘Eddie’s Bar’. Often described as one of the most beautiful and iconic Formula One cars of all time, it was serendipitous to be able to display Chassis 6 which is currently in our care.

Notably, 191/6 was driven by Micheal Schumacher on his debut weekend in Formula One, where Eddie Jordan stated:

“I’ve seen him in Formula 3 and I have this, well the team has this attitude, to give youth a chance. We think it’s a progressive way to see what the potential of Schumacher is for the future”

Schumacher proved this to be the right move the moment he got in the car, when in practice on Friday the 23rd of August 1991, he lapped 5th fastest, which cast him and Eddie Jordan into the limelight and began the iconic legacy that both are fondly remembered by.

As always, The Goodwood Members’ meeting was a celebration of the past, present and future of motorsports. We are looking forward to the rest of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and Goodwood Revival, as well as future annual editions of the Members’ Meeting.
