The Goodwood Members' Meetings are now firmly established as the epic season opener for the years' Historic Motor Racing action. The 2 day events have become a huge success and have recreated the atmosphere and camaraderie of the original BARC Members' Meetings held at Goodwood throughout the 1950s and 1960s with great success.
As part of a full programme of racing, the Members' Meeting features all kinds of cars from classic tin-tops and GTs, to motorcycles and open-wheeled Formula 3 and F1 machines, offering visitors a friendly and intimate atmosphere with less of the crowding which has become a part of the Revival meeting. A winning formula of spectacular cars, high-speed track demonstrations, fun-packed festivities and great entertainment has put this event in a class of its own and DK Engineering are always thrilled and privileged to be a part of any of Goodwood's spectacular events.
At this year's member's meeting, DK was represented by James Cottingham who drove three cars over the course of the weekend, most appropriately in a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO, but also in the ex Scuderia Bear GT40 and in DK's Ford Mustang for the all-American Muscle car Pierpoint Cup race.
The Pierpoint cup, named after the Mustang Driving Touring Car Champion Roy Pierpoint, was solely for American V8 powered Cars up to 1966 and featured a wonderful grid of Mustangs, Falcons, Barracudas and Darts! The DK entered Mustang amongst the most historic of them all, having been raced in the USA in period by NASCAR driver Gene Felton. Driven well by James, the car proved competitive and will offer the new owner further Goodwood entries as well as a route into the ever-popular Masters and HSCC Historic Touring car series.
Meanwhile in the 2-Driver "Graham Hill Trophy" - a sort of TT equivalent for the members meeting - James and co-driver Nicky Pastorelli battled their 250 GTO from an unlucky grid position of 15th (due to an unforeseen qualifying issue) to a race finish of 4th, narrowly missing out on the podium.
Both drivers showed strong pace and a more fortunate qualifying session would have undoubtedly seen the car battling for the race lead with eventual winner Mike Whittaker in his TVR Griffith.
The final race of the weekend was appropriately named the Surtees Trophy which was preceded by a 'Moment of Noise' (mainly engine), a fitting way to remember such a great legend of our sport. James Cottingham driving the Scuderia Bear GT40 enjoyed a race-long battle with Sam Hancock in another GT40, with Sam holding onto third place at the chequered flag. This brought the close to a fantastic weekend of racing. We now look forward to a busy season of events in 2017.
