The name, “GTO” (Gran Turismo Omologata) instantly calls to mind two Ferraris that have entered the collective imagination as symbols of performance. After the 1962 250 GTO, which swept the boards in GT racing categories in the 1960s and is now a highly prized collector's car, came the iconic 1984 288 GTO, which pretty much invented the entire modern supercar genre. The 599 GTO is the most recent GTO. Ferrari has only given this name to 3 cars and each GTO was based on a circuit car - the 599 GTO was based on the 599 GTB Fiorano chassis but is essentially the road-going version of the 599XX track car.

The 599 GTO weighs 100 kg less than the standard GTB by a severe diet in a similar manner to other recent Ferrari lightweight models such as the 430 Scuderia. The 599 GTO is visually aggressive thanks to styling elements derived from the 599XX - but it's not all for show. Thanks to concepts transferred from the track car to the road-going version, the GTO generates downforce of 144 kg at 200 km/h. The entire car has received design revisions over the standard GTB including the front, the sides, the flat underbody and the cooling flows. In the latter instance, the GTO can count on improved ducting to the brake discs and pads, and the adoption of wheel doughnuts – a disc positioned outside the brake disc that ensures that hot air exiting the wheel arch stays as close to the body of the car as possible to reduce drag; again, a feature borrowed straight from the FXX.

When produced in 2011, Ferrari announced that the 599 GTO was their fastest road car ever, able to lap the Fiorano test circuit in 1 minute 24 seconds, one second faster than the Ferrari Enzo. Its engine produces a staggering 661 bhp at 8,250 rpm, with 460 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. The 599 GTO can sprint to 62 mph in under 3.35 seconds whilst easily reaching a top speed of over 208 mph.

This example was ordered new through Rosso Scuderia Ferrari of Tokyo in February 2011, suitably optioned in Rosso Scuderia, the chosen colour of Ferrari’s Formula 1 team for the Schumacher era and a hue that made its production debut on the F430 in 2004. The roof is finished in Grigio Silverstone Opaco as many GTOs were.

When the 599 XX was upgraded to Evo specification at the tail end of 2011, the remaining parts were offered to select clientele and members of Ferrari’s exclusive Corse Clienti program only as an upgrade for the 599 GTO through Ferrari Genuine, their post-build parts catalogue. The complete aerodynamic package at the time was more than 10% of the list price of a GTO. The complete kit was manufactured for Ferrari by (one of their seven) suppliers for F50 and Enzo composites. The full package comprised of three new elements, each made exclusively from exposed carbon fibre and forming two options for track use. The first, an extended front splitter securely mounted below the front bumper was paired with revised C-pillar winglets and designed for use on fast circuits with top speeds exceeding 220km/h. The second, for use on tighter circuits where top speed was below 220km/h, significantly increases rear downforce with the addition of a full width extended rear boot lid to the preceding options.

It’s first owner, a collector based in Tokyo, jumped at the opportunity to have the full package fitted to the car. Whilst this GTO is accompanied by its original panels, it was delivered to its first keeper in 2012 with the complete package already fitted prior to delivery. It is important to note that fewer than 25 examples of this package are understood to be fitted to 599 GTOs.

Aside from the XX package, this example was optioned from new with a wealth of carbon fibre options; including centre caps, engine covers and headlight buckets. Furthermore, the fuel cap has been autographed by none other than Luca Cordera di Montezemolo, Ferrari’s chairman at the time.

Inside the car receives Extra-Campionario Rosso Alcantara with Rosso Tessuto inserts, the stitching is also completed in the special colour of Grigio Chiaro.

The car has been kept as part of a collection from new. It was imported to the UK in 2016 and has since been further kept as part of a collection. To date, this example has covered just 280 miles from new which has been corroborated by a gearbox control unit readout at DK Engineering.
